“I once said I would never paint Western paintings. Famous last words!” — Sam Thiewes
Sam Thiewes’s journey into Western art began at an art show at the Stockmen Club during the Denver Stock Show. There, Sam met working cowgirls and recognized how few artists were telling their stories.
What began as paintings of cowgirls and their lives grew into a broader exploration of the ranching world. Photographing roundups and cattle drives, Sam realized that telling the full story meant including the cowboys, too. Today, Sam’s paintings portray cowgirls, cowboys, cattle, horses, and the everyday rhythms of ranch life.
A branding in southeastern Colorado brought that purpose into focus. Four generations gathered, ranging in age from two and a half to well into their eighties, offering a vivid picture of ranching traditions being passed down and carried forward.
Through these paintings, Sam hopes to document a living history, with lasting gratitude to the friends who have welcomed Sam into their lives and allowed their stories to be shared.
